| Vaginal Penetration This is one realm of sexual contact where some would think that no artificial lubrication is required. In many cases, this is true. Natural lubrication in the vagina usually occurs within 10 to 30 seconds of a woman becoming sexually aroused. However, some women experience a type of sexual dysfunction in which there is little or no mucus production, and penetrative sex can become uncomfortable or painful. Many more women experience the effects of "drying up", especially after a lengthy period of lovemaking.
That said, vaginal intercourse with the aid of a water-based lubricant can heighten sensation and eliminate discomfort. Astroglide is one such lubricant. Developed by NASA scientists, even a small amount of the stuff is extremely slippery and can make the lovemaking experience heavenly. It's slightly 'thicker' than water, sometimes necessitating repeated applications when it dries out. Oftentimes, however, the lubricating effect can be 'reactivated' by applying water with a spray bottle.
For those who demand a longer-lasting lubricant, the ID line of products offer a slightly thicker substance that does not dry out as quickly as Astroglide. There is also the ID Plus line of lubricants, which contains the spermicidal agent Nonoxynol-9. This can effectively improve protection against pregnancy when used with a condom. However, it is not recommended for use during oral sex due to its bitter taste.
All of our water-based lubricants, when used with a condom, can enhance sensation for men. Simply apply a small dab on the head of the penis before applying the condom, and you will invariably find the increased friction makes wearing a condom something to look forward to!
Anal Play
Please, we implore you: Do not attempt anal intercourse without the aid of a lubricant. The rectal membrane is quite thin and does not lubricate naturally, and thus can be damaged without sufficient preparation. And don't be sparing! In the words of Intimategifts.com's own Girl Friday Night, "With anal sex, too much lubricant is almost enough." Astroglide and ID both work equally well, although with Astroglide you may require repeated applications during the course of lovemaking. ID will generally last longer during anal sex, but even still: liberally apply more than you think is necessary, top it off with a bit more for good measure, and you're ready to go!
Masturbation
Many men find that masturbation is vastly improved with the use of a personal lubricant. Circumcised men in particular may require a personal lubricant, as the skin of the penis is less motile. No two men masturbate in exactly the same way, however, and the appropriate lubricant is simply a matter of choice. Experiment with a variety of lubricants, both oil and water-based, until you find the one most desirable for you.
Adult Toys
Men and women both may find that the use of sex toys necessitates the use of a personal lubricant. You'll quickly discover that the outer shell of the many adult toys absorbs your natural lubrication making additional lubricant a must. Furthermore, sensation can be heightened if lubricants are used in conjunction with vibrators and dildos, for both penetration and exterior massage. With sex toys inserted into the anus, however, the use of lubricant is essential. more about Lub: Why use lubricants, and how is choosing the best kind important for your pleasure?
Lubricants can enhance sex between partners, when using a sex toy or by yourself. When making love to a partner lubricants can add to the erotic feel of the experience. Some women's vaginas don't self-lubricate enough, and these women can find intercourse extremely uncomfortable. Lubrication is often the answer.
When using a sexual toy inserted into the vagina or anus, most people find the experience much more enjoyable when using a lubricant. Lubrication makes toys glide sensually in, out and about. However, be sure to choose a lube that doesn’t damage you or your erotic toys.
There are four types of lubricants: Water-based, petroleum-based, those made from natural oils, and silicone-based. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
Water-based Lubes
These are the most versatile, safe and popular lubricants for all situations. Typically made of de-ionized water, glycerin, and propylene glycol, they are safe to use with condoms and all forms of barrier birth control. It is rare that water-based lubricants cause irritation, and they don’t stain clothing. They are safe to ingest, and they come in both flavored and unflavored varieties. They tend to dry out over extended periods, but a little water or saliva will get you slick again.
Petroleum-based lubes
These include KY Jelly, Vaseline products, mineral oil products and baby oil. Unfortunately, these products all destroy latex, so they cannot be used with condoms, cervical caps or diaphragms. In addition, they can inflame and irritate the vagina. They also stain clothing. Petroleum-based lubes do tend to last well, so they are often used by men during masturbation.
Natural oil-based lubes
These are derived from natural oil sources such as nuts or vegetables. Like petroleum-based lubes, they too destroy latex (condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps) and stain clothing. However, they do have one key advantage over petroleum-based lubes: they don’t cause vaginal irritation. This makes them excellent for female [and male] masturbation, as well as unprotected vaginal.
Silicone-based lubes
These have the benefits of water-based lubricants with the addition of being waterproof, so they may be used in the bath, or the jacuzzi, or... In addition, they tend to lubricate longer than water-based lubes. Silicone will not hurt latex, so they’re safe with condoms and other forms of barrier birth control; however, they can affect adult toys made from silicone.
